Conclusion of “Vintage Jesus”

by Eric Stephens on July 25, 2009

Today we finished our study through Vintage Jesus in an effort to learn more of what the entire Bible says about Christ (technical term: Christology). I hope those who have attended and/or read the book have been blessed by the content (and entertained by Driscoll’s jabs and satire).

For the concluding chapter (12) we chatted about what Christ will do on his return. Before I left we were chatting about ache-eee-double-hockey-stick (hell) and how some modern theologians are softening the gospel’s message regarding hell (possibly in order to make it more attractive). We also touched on the question “how could a loving God toss someone into eternal torment?” in which some responded “how could such a holy God let pieces of crap (sorry Dave V., can’t say the “s” word on a rated-G blog) like us into heaven?”

Driscoll provided a few Scriptures in the double-secret study guide that I didn’t get a chance to review before I had to leave. I’ll list them here for your own follow up study:

  • 2 Peter 3:9
  • Romans 2:5
  • Daniel 12:2
  • Hebrews 9:27
  • 2 Cor 5:8
  • John 5:22
  • Rev 20:12-13
  • Rev 14:10
  • Phil 2:10-11
  • Eph 2:8-10
  • 2 Cor 5:9-10
  • Heb 12:1-3

Our next topic will focus on the Holy Spirit. I’m working on a book selection now. Torrey’s book is a top contender with Smith’s book being evaluated to at the recommendation of my neighbor John F.

We’ll start meeting again the first Saturday after Labor Day (10 Sep 2009). In the meantime, enjoy the time off with your families and friends. Remember that the Pig Roast is on 15 August 2009 at CCFL so I hope that you all can make it. This particular event is open to young men 12 and older as well.
