Colossians 2:8-15

by Pastor Ken on August 16, 2009

Everyone has a philosophy, an overarching way of looking at the world.  Some are empiricists; seeing is believing.  Some are nihilists; there is no god and we all just die and go to nothing.  Still others are utilitarian like Peter Singer of Princeton; whatever works as long as no one gets hurt.

There are truly a lot of ways to look at our world.  Paul is warning us about philosophies that distract us from Christ.  I like what Cicero, the Roman philosopher and statesman said.  He said, “There is nothing so absurd but some philosopher has said it.”  Just because someone can say it or even make an argument for it, does not make it permissible.  You might be able to build a house with your philosophy, but it will fall when the storms come if it’s not built on the Rock - Jesus (Matthew 7:24-27)!
