A note from Eddie Eagan…
Greetings in the Name above all names- Jesus:
Maybe ten years ago a brother at my old church approached me after a meeting to tell me he had just met a Paraguayan. She and her family were going to rent one of his apartments. He told her about me and she gave him her number and asked me to call her. That is how I first met Dr. Lil Chamorro. She is a wonderful sister in the Lord. She comes from a strong Christian family all of whom love the Lord. Lil and I now attend the same church and have become good friends.
A couple of years after we met, two of Lil’s sisters came to the States for a visit. Karen and I took all of them out to dinner at the Outback. Maria, the older of the two, shared with us the story of how her husband was assassinated on the streets of the capital. The thieves killed him for his wristwatch. He had just gotten right with the Lord. On his body was found a letter he had written to Jesus just two days before his death. He left behind three young sons and a daughter. He had been a successful banker. Shortly after his death, the family lost everything. Maria, who had worked as a high school art teacher for over twenty years, was let go from her job just prior to his assassination. She has worked as a waitress at a restaurant ever since. There wasn’t a dry eye in the group when Maria finished her testimony. Maria exudes a joy and a peace that can only be attributed to the Lord. That the hand of God rests upon her is undeniable. She has a wonderfully sweet spirit.
This past May she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her right breast was removed and she began chemotherapy in July. Since her employers had not been paying into the national health-care system for their waitresses, Maria was not covered by it. She has managed to pay for her treatments through friends, brethren and an offering taken up by Pastor Ken a few months ago. Yesterday after the meeting, I asked her son David how she was doing. He explained that her employers, upon learning of her condition, had signed her up for the national health-care system. However, there is a six-month waiting period so her coverage won’t begin until November. She was supposed to begin her second round of treatments today but has no money. Besides, the first round has left her veins unable to take a needle. Therefore, they intend to install a tube on Wednesday over her heart through which they will directly inject the required medications. I asked her son to send me a detailed breakdown of the treatments and their costs. Between now and November, it appears she will need $2,200 to cover everything. I want to emphasize that neither Lil nor David approached me to ask for help. I was the one who initiated the conversation yesterday with David. It is only because I did, that I learned of his mother’s dire situation. I have had cancer. I can’t imagine being told I need to wait a month to receive treatment for a disease that spreads like wildfire. I have spoken about this with Pastor Ken. He wants to cooperate with me in this effort. If you feel led of the Lord to help, please make your check payable to Calvary Chapel of Syracuse, write “Maria Peréz” in the Memo field and mail it to CC-Syracuse, 103 Grampian Way, Liverpool, NY 13090. May God richly bless you!
