1 John 2:3-11

by Pastor Geoff on October 14, 2009

Even though hardly anything changes there from year to year, many of us make it an annual tradition to attend the New York State Fair.  Over the years, in the health building, there has been an area devoted to teaching about fire safety.  It is in this area that you will find what is called “The House of Hazards”.  As you walk from room to room in this exhibit, there are different situations in which a family finds itself utterly ignoring anything to do with proper fire safety, whether it’s in the living room, the bedroom, or the kitchen, among others.

The idea with the “House” is to encourage people to take what they learn there and actually apply it to their home life.  But I wonder how many really do?  Beloved, to a far more serious degree, John wants his readers to be found solidly grounded in sound doctrine, and sound doctrine rightly applied.  To not apply it is to be in an even more dangerous place than what the “House of Hazards” could ever depict.

In our passage today, the apostle desires his listeners to think seriously about what it really means to know God.  What does it look like in our lives?  As we listen, may we once again discover that to know God is to love God, and to love God is to love His children.
