1 Kings 18

by Pastor Ken on October 28, 2009

It is certainly true that we live in a time of history in which the institution of marriage seems more under attack than ever.  Our culture is relentlessly trying to blur the lines of this sacred union between one man and one woman.  We’re barraged with questions like, “What’s so wrong with living together?”  Or, “Don’t some experts say that extra-marital affairs can strengthen a marriage?”  And of course, “Who says it has to be one man and one woman?”  What is becoming increasingly in vogue in our day is still put into very simple terms by our God who does not mince words - He calls it sin.

Our passage before us asks a very searching question, “How long will you falter between two opinions?”  Elijah was putting it to the prophets of Baal very clearly, “How long will you try to have it both ways, when you know you cannot?”  To return to our marriage analogy, God had forged an everlasting covenant in a sort of marriage with His people Israel, but they were content to hold God at arm’s length, and commit spiritual adultery on Him.  As we hear Elijah’s clarion call to Israel, may we take a good look at our own lives, and ask ourselves, “How long will we falter between two opinions?”
