It was October 12th, 1986. The California Angels had a 3-point lead over the Red Sox in an ALCS game. As the game progressed, the Sox narrowed the margin more and more, and eventually the score was 5-4 at the top of the ninth. Now only ahead by one run and with one of the Red Sox on base, the Angels brought in one of their ace relief pitchers, Donny Moore. With a 2-2 count, Dave Henderson hit a home run to take the Red Sox to victory and on to the World Series.
Needless to say, Donny Moore was devastated. Traded to another team, but still with the memory of a devastated career, Moore committed suicide. His daughter, looking back, said in so many words, “What else did he have to live for?”
How do we respond to failure? Do we plunge into despair with no hope of recovery? Beloved, we’re all going to trip up, sometimes in ways that will greatly challenge us in our Christian walk. But God wants to meet us in those places, just as He did with His servant Elijah. Can you hear His voice calling you to press forward?
