I don’t know what you think, but it seems to me that we get bombarded with a lot of local commercials about this new or used car dealer or that one. “Just make that short drive”, they might say, and come and take a test drive in their latest offerings. “Are you looking for something a little bigger? We’ve got it.” Or maybe you’re looking for something more sporty, but hopefully with decent mileage? “Right this way,” they say. Taking a test drive gives us an idea as to whether or not a certain car is for us or our family. We can get some peace of mind afterward; “I could see myself driving this car.”
Beloved, on a far greater scale, we are called to test something - “the spirits”. What are they, you ask? They are those who claim to speak forth the Word of God. As important as it is to double-check the claims of a used car salesman, how much more the man who says he is a messenger of the gospel? And how then, do we test the spirits? The answer, we will see, is very simple - by noting what they say about Jesus Christ. For “every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God” (1 John 4:2). So how about it? Can you spot a “lemon” when you see one?
